NOTES TO PLUMBING CROSS-REFERENCE TABLE

Decimal-inch dimensions are located in the colored rows.

Metric (millimeters) are located in parenthesis in the clear white rows.

The Outside Diameters of all pipes and tubes vary slightly +/- the stated diameters because of differing manufacturing methods. For the acceptable tolerances of these slight +/- variations see the specific ANSI, ASME, ASTM, NEMA Standard for each pipe or tube.

NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) is a dimensionless designator that has replaced the former term of art "Inch Nominal Size". NPS is not entirely precise in referring to a pipe or tubes' actual size, but human usage requires the use of such ready reference term for quick everyday discourse and commerce and there it predominates as the traditional dimensional reference used in industry discourse.

PVC Pipe Schedule 40, 80, 120 Pipe Outside Diameters have as of January 2001 been verified as consistent with those industry standard dimensions also specified in ASTM D 1785 - 99. The PVC pipe referred to in this Table is poly(vinyl chloride) PVC pipe for use in the distribution of pressurized liquids only. The Outside Diameter remains the same for both wall thicknesses known as Schedule 40, 80 and 120.

PVC Pipe Schedule 40 Fittings Minimum Outside Diameters have as of January 2001 been verified as consistent with those industry standard dimensions also specified in ASTM D 2466 - 99. The PVC fittings referred to in this Table are poly(vinyl chloride) PVC pipe for use in the distribution of pressurized liquids only.

PVC Pipe Schedule 20 (a/k/a IPS and Thin Wall) Pipe Outside Diameters have as of January 2001 been verified as consistent with those industry standard dimensions also specified in ASTM D 2241 - 00. The PVC pipe referred to in this Table is poly(vinyl chloride) PVC pipe for use in the distribution of pressurized liquids only, and is typically used in irrigation systems.

CPVC Outside Diameters have as of January 2001, been verified as consistent with those industry standard dimensions also specified in ASTM F 441/F 441M - 99. The CPVC referred to in this Table is chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC) pipe for use in the distribution of pressurized liquids only. The Outside Diameter remains the same for both wall thicknesses known as Schedule 40 and 80.

Steel Pipe Outside Diameters have as of January 2001 been verified as consistent with those industry standard dimensions also specified in ASME B36.10M-1996 (Welded and Seamless Wrought Steel Pipe). The Steel Pipe referred to in this Table is welded and seamless wrought steel pipe for high or low pressure and pressure in pipelines and piping systems. The Outside Diameter remains the same for all the different wall thicknesses known as Schedule 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, and 160.

Stainless Steel Pipe Outside Diameters have as of January 2001 been verified as consistent with those industry standard dimensions also specified in ANSI/ASME B36.19M-1985 (Stainless Steel Pipe). The Stainless Steel Pipe referred to in this Table is welded and seamless wrought stainless steel pipe commonly used in pipeline and piping systems. The Outside Diameter remains the same for all the different wall thicknesses known as Schedule 5S, 10S, 40S, and 80S.

Brass Pipe (Standard and Extra Strong) Outside Diameters have as of January 2001 been verified as consistent with those industry standard dimensions also specified in ASTM B 43 - 98. The Stainless Steel Pipe referred to in this Table is seamless red brass pipe commonly used in boiler feed lines, plumbing, and such. It may also be found in use in decorative or functional architectural applications such as railings. The Outside Diameter remains the same for both wall thicknesses known as Regular and Extra Strong.

Copper Tube Types K, L, and M Outside Diameters have as of January 2001, been verified as consistent with those industry standard dimensions also specified in ASTM B 88 - 99. The copper tube referred to in this Table is seamless copper water tube for general plumbing and similar uses involving the conveyance of liquids. The Outside Diameter remains the same for the three wall thicknesses known as Type K, L, and M.

Copper Pipe Outside Diameters have as of January 2001, been verified as consistent with those industry standard dimensions also specified in ASTM B 42 - 98. The copper pipe tube referred to in this Table is seamless copper pipe for use in plumbing, boiler feed lines, and similar uses. The Outside Diameter remains the same for the three wall thicknesses known as Type K, L, and M.
